describing what was going on right now, and in the
immediate past, which for him meant the 19th
century. Here what we’re looking at is what he saw
as this invasion by electric media beginning with
the telegraph, going on through telephone, radio,
all the way up to the television. This was the
subject of his early work in the ’60s. There you
had, he argued, another kind of shift which again
he attempted to make people aware of. And that,
of course, was part of the subject of
